Our Vision
The Student Empowered Learning Facility (S.E.L.F.) is a specialized program that provides the highest level of social/emotional support for each student while maintaining the rigor of academic standards. We envision a society in which all youth can be successful. We are committed to making success a reality for all youth. We strive to positively impact youth and the professions who work with them by focusing on program development, professional training and child advocacy.

Mission
In the S.E.L.F. program, we believe that all students can and want to succeed. It is the mission of the program to assist students in overcoming social and emotional challenges in order to become productive citizens. We strive for our students to become College, Career and Community (3-C) ready by providing students with increased therapeutic supports, a structured learning environments, and clear and consistent expectations.

Program Overview
Tempe Union High School District and The Menta Group® have partnered to provide services for students diagnosed with disabilities in the S.E.L.F program.
The S.E.L.F. program provides students with an opportunity to participate in a modified curriculum tailored to meet their individual learning needs. S.E.L.F. also provides therapeutic supports embedded in the program to teach social, behavioral and academic skills students need to be successful in school, community and careers.

Student academic programming includes an emphasis on core content including mathematics, reading and writing. Students are eligible to attend the program based upon recommendation from an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team.

Students receive consistent positive behavior intervention supports (PBIS) as part of the daily programming. Each student participates in a social emotional curriculum including a leveled point system that provides students with an opportunity to access positive reinforcement and learn about the natural consequences of poor behavior choices.

A chief goal of the S.E.L.F. programs is to support student reintegration to their respective home schools. The program is designed to prepare students with the knowledge & skills needed to be successful in less restrictive settings. Any decision made to reintegrate a student into a less restrictive placement will be determined by an IEP team and based on the review of specific exit criteria outlined in the student’s IEP.

Transition Services: The transition program is designed to meet the unique needs of each student. We as educators are charged with preparing students the next phase of life. Menta uses research based best practices to design and refine transition programming for their students.

Students Served:
Grades 9-12
Disabilities: EDP, ID, Autism, TBI, OHI

The Menta Group has over 40 years of experience providing special education services and supports to youth. Students attending Menta programs have significant emotional and behavioral needs that preclude them from participating in the general education setting or in other special education settings, making their needs more significant and complex than other learners with special education needs. The three driving ideas behind all programming and interventions for these at-risk students are PERSONALIZATION, PREPARATION FOR LIFE, and SUPPORTS FOR SUCCESS.

**PERSONALIZATION: Menta creates a personalized system of education that engages and motivates all students, regardless of his or her circumstances. Using a data-driven framework to set goals and assess progress, we ensure that all students receive the academic and developmental supports specific to their situations that will help them succeed in school and in life.

**PREPARATION FOR LIFE: Our goal is to prepare each student for life beyond school by ensuring readiness for post-secondary education, meaningful employment, and engaged citizenship. The key to achieving this goal is the use of performance-based learning strategies that place all students at the center of the learning process, enabling them to demonstrate mastery based on high, clear, and commonly held expectations.

**SUPPORTS FOR SUCCESS: We understand that education requires a focus on the whole child and not on academic achievement alone. We implement a comprehensive system of learning supports that address social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development along a continuum of services to ensure the success of all students.
