Although all students did a fantastic job, congratulations to our 3 winners.

  • Illinois Iron Chef Competition

The Iron Chef Competition was held on Thursday, October 8th at CORE Academy.   Six schools (CORE Academy, Menta Academy Hillside, Hillside East, Menta Academy Chicago South, Country Club Hills Tech and Trade Center, and Lake Shore Academy) worked in teams of 2-5 students and competed in creating the Perfect Pancake.  Students spent weeks prepping for the competition.  They not only utilize skills such as teamwork, sanitation, safety, and cooking, they also need to master many of the Language Arts Common Core Standards as well as the Math Standards.  The students research a recipe, they determine how much the item will cost to create and how much they would charge for it, menu design, as well as a presentation on their pancake is all included in determining the winner of the event.

CORE Academy and Menta Academy Chicago South tied for the championship.  Core created a pancake sandwich that also contained eggs, bacon, and a spicy sausage.  MACS created a sugar lovers dream with their Oreo Pancakes.  All the students involved in this highly competitive event exhibited excellent skills and should be extremely proud of their handwork.

  • 2nd Annual Turkey Dinner at Mesa Center for Success

IMG_6617This year the Mesa Center for Success hosted it’s 2nd Annual Turkey Dinner. Nearly all of our students and their families came, over 120 guests were served.  Staff set up classrooms with Arts and Crafts activities so families could spend time together, creating memories! This year our guests had the opportunity to decorate a Turkey Picture Frame. Staff then took a family photo and each family was able to take home a framed picture to remember this Thanksgiving event!

IMG_6620Of course all of the families enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner complete with stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls, green bean casserole and a variety of desserts.

In addition, this year we had a great amount of support from the community.

The Mesa Public Library joined us to sign students and their families up for library cards and provided information on what other services the library has to offer. There was information provided by the Boys and Girls club including resources for after school programming along with a discount to register. Representatives from the East Valley Resource Center and the Child Crisis Center were present and provided resources for parenting classes, counseling and social skills groups.  A new addition in our community outreach this year was Community Dental. They are a local  mobile dentist company that came to give our students and their families information, resources and a free check up! We look forward to partnering with all of these community resources for future events!

DSCN0082The highlight of the night was our ability to provide each family with their own thanksgiving meal to take home and prepare for Thanksgiving!  Each gift box came complete with a frozen turkey, potatoes, stuffing, green beans and corn and was a result of our staff’s generosity and partnering with local grocery stores. A special thanks to Safeway, Fry’s, Wal-mart and The Menta Group for these generous donations!

It was a powerful night of sharing and strengthening relationships between The Mesa Center for Success, our families and the Mesa community. We look forward to building on the success of this event and making our 3rd Annual Turkey Dinner even better!
